Kellie’s Castle is located in Batu Gajah, Perak, Malaysia. It is situated about 40 kilometers south of the main city of Ipoh.

How to go Kellie's Castle

Kellie’s Castle is easily accessible by car from Ipoh, making it a popular day-trip destination for visitors. Here are some common ways to get to Kellie’s Castle;

  1. By Car:
    From Ipoh, visitors can drive to Kellie’s Castle via Route 1 heading southeast along the Jalan Raja DiHilir. The route is straightforward, but using GPS which directs to the castle is better option. Depending on the traffic condition, the drive will take about 30 – 45 minutes.
  2. By Taxi or Ride-Sharing Service:
    Visitor can book a taxi or use ride-sharing apps like GRAB by simply setting up your pickup location in Ipoh and input Kellie’s Castle as your destination. GRAB is a popular ride-sharing service in Malaysia which makes it convenient travel to Kellie’s Castle. But due the location it is best to pre-booked your ride, specially when heading back to Ipoh, else visitors will need to wait for some time booking a ride

Parking Areas

Car park is available for all visitors located right at the entrance, parking fees are RM 2 per vehicle. Due to limited space, the car park may easily get occupied during the weekend. Visitors are encouraged to park on the other side of the parking lot located beside the main entrance.

History of Kellie's Castle

William Kellie Smith, a civil engineer from Scotland built his first mansion in 1909 “Kella House”. In 1915, he started planning a huge castle which consist of 6-storey, together with built Malaya’s first elevator, indoor tennis court and rooftop. Due the Spanish flu pandemic that hit during 1918’s most of the workers suffer and die which leads to unfinished construction of the castle. And also after that time, Smith died from pneumonia hence later the house was sold off to the British company. Currently, the castle is one of the tourist destination in Ipoh and managed by local company.

Interiors Design and Architecture

The castle consists of three (3) floors and a staircase that leads to the roof of the building. There are rooms where most rooms are empty and unfinished. There is also a hidden passage underground that leads to the wine cellar.

There is a storyboard located on the walls and corner of the castle which explains the story and description of the castle. This information is written in both Bahasa and English to help tourists better understand the history of the castle.

Mysterious Stories

The castle has gained a reputation for being haunted, with local legends claiming that Kellie-Smith’s spirit haunts the building. These stories have added to the mystery and appeal of the site, making it a popular spot for tourists and paranormal enthusiasts.

Ruins of Kellie's House

Kellas House was the original house where the Kellie’s family live during the early 1900’s. But after world war II the house was destroyed and now the remains of the old structure and pillars of the house.

Cafeteria

Outside the castle compound, visitors will find amenities such as a small cafe that offers local Malaysian cuisine refreshments and drinks. It also have souvenir shops, where visitors can check on products, such postcards, books or local crafts. and vintage items available for all visitors to check. Toilets with basic restroom facilities are available and disabled-friendly.
