Traveling to Nikko is a relatively straightforward journey, where it offers beautiful views and a chance to experience the scenic beauty of Japan. For a tourist traveller, below are the common method for getting to Nikko.

A. From Tokyo (Train)
Ride the Tobu Limited Express from Asakusa Station to Tobu-Nikko Station. This is a direct and convenient way to get to Nikko which will usually take 2 hours journey. The Tobu Limited Express offers comfortable seating and scenic views.

B. JR and Tobu Combination:
Take the JR Tohoku Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Utsunomiya Station, then transfer to the Tobu Nikko Line from Utsunomiya Station to Tobu Nikko Station. The travel time will take 2 to 2.5 hours in total which slightly longer but allows for the use of JR Pass.

C. Express Bus:
There are various express buses operate from Tokyo Station, Shinjuku Station, or Ikebukuro Station to Nikko. The journey will take approximately 2 to 2.5 hours, which make it convenient if you prefer direct routes and a more relaxed travel experience

Once you arrive in Nikko, visiting the World Heritage Sites is relatively straightforward. Most of the visitors will start the Tobu-Nikko Station, here’s a guide on how to reach these key sites:

A. LOCAL BUS
Ride the local bus (Kanto Bus or Nikko City Bus) bound for Toshogu or the “Toshogu-mae” stop. The bus ride will takes about 10 minutes. Alight at the Shinkyo Bridge and walk for about 10 minutes to reach the entrance.

B. WALK
Visitors who prefer to walk, can take a 15-20-minutes walk from Tobu Nikko Station to reach the site.

Navigating the Nikko world heritage sites is quite easy, since oshogu Shrine, Rinnoji Temple, and Futarasan Shrine are concentrated in one central location. The sites are all within walking distance of each other making it easy to visit them in a single day. The best time to visit is during the early morning or late afternoon which offer a quieter experience.

#1 Nikko Rin’nōji Temple

Founded by the Buddhist monk Shodo Shonin, Rinnoji is a significant temple in Nikko. The temple complex includes the Sanbutsudo (Three Buddha Hall), which houses three large gold-plated statues of Buddha, and the beautiful gardens surrounding the temple.

#2 Nikkō Tōshogū Shrine

Nikko Toshogu Shrine is the most famous and historically significant sites in the Nikko’s World Heritage Sites. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a key cultural landmark in Japan. Shinkyō Bridge
