Mount Fuji, is Japan’s highest mountain which stands at 3,776 meters (12,389 feet) above sea level. It is one of the country’s iconic symbols due to its symmetrical cone shape which is often covered with snow on top. Mount Fuji is a stratovolcano located along the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures. The last eruption recorded was in 1708 but after the history of volcanic activity, has been relatively quiet. Climbing Mount Fuji is known as a major tourist destination, conquering the iconic peak’s natural beauty and experiencing the cultural heritage of the region.

WHERE IS MOUNT FUJI VIA YOSHIDA TRAIL

Mount Fuji is situated in between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures of Japan. The famous Yoshida Trail starts at the 5th Station of Mount Fuji (also known as the Yoshida 5th Station), which is the most accessible and commonly used starting point for climbers. The Yoshida 5th station is approximately 2,300 meters (7,550 feet) above sea level.

HOW TO GO MOUNT FUJI YOSHIDA TRAIL

Bus To Mount Fuji 5th Station

By Bus: There a direct buses to the Fujisan 5th Station available from major stations such as the Shinjuku Expressway Bus Terminal. The bus journey typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours.
By Train: Take a train from Tokyo to Otsuki Station on the JR Chuo Line. From Otsuki Station, transfer to the Fujisan Limited Express, which will take you to the Kawaguchiko Station. From Kawaguchiko Station, you can catch a local bus to the 5th Station.

The facilities at Yoshida 5th Station offer various amenities, including shops, restaurants, information centers, and restrooms. This is also the last point to purchase supplies before beginning the climb. The Fujisan 5th Station offers climbers and tourists the necessary amenities and support before tackling the ascent to the summit of Mount Fuji.

With the start of the 2024 climbing season, a hiking fee was introduced to all climbers hiking Mount Fuji. The hiking fee of ¥2,000 is a mandatory fee for all climbers and an optional fee of ¥1,000 conservation and maintenance of Mount Fuji. The fee will be collected at the main entrance of Yoshida Trail, and climbers will given an ID tag which are required to wear all the time. Visitors can purchase the ticket at the main entrance or buy the ticket online. For the year 2024, the trail opening for Yoshida Trail starts from 1 July 2024 – 10 September 2024.

The Yoshida Trail is a challenging but accessible route to the summit of Mount Fuji, making it suitable for climbers with moderate experience. The trail starts from Yoshida 5th Station which typically takes about 5 to 7 hours to reach and 3 to 5 hours to descend. The difficulty level is considered moderately challenging, with steep sections and rocky terrain as you approach the summit. To avoid the risk of altitude sickness, it is advised to acclimatize at 5th Station or book a mountain hut to rest and schedule the summit push for the next day.

Yoshida Trail Towards 6th Station Mount Fuji

From the 5th Station to the 6th Station, it will take about 1 to 1.5 hours of hiking, depending on your pace and conditions. It will have an elevation of 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) above sea level. The trail consists of volcanic gravel and rocks and the path is well-marked. Climbers will enjoy a good view along with steady ascent and some steep sections.

7th Station Kamaiwakan Yoshida Trail

Heading to the 7th station will take around one (1) hour of hiking with an elevation of 2,700 meters (8,858 feet) above sea level. The trail becomes increasingly rugged as you gain altitude. Once climbers reach the 7th station, mountain huts provide essential services for climbers, including basic accommodation and meals. Climbers who use restroom facilities are required to pay a small fee of ¥200 to use toilet basic facilities.

The trail to towards the 8th station is composed of volcanic rocks and gravel, making the ascent physically demanding. At the 8th station, the elevation will be around 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) above sea level and take around 1 to 1.5 hours of hiking from the 7th station. There are several mountain huts located at or near the 8th Station including Taishikan Mountain Huts. These mountain huts provide a place to rest and can offer meals. From the 8th station, it will take around 2 – 3 hours hike to reach the summit.

Climbers who plan to stay overnight are recommended to book a mountain hut reservation, especially during peak climbing season. Mountain huts are located at each station of the Yoshida trail, starting from the 6th station to the 9th station. The fee for staying in a mountain hut typically ranges from ¥6,000 to ¥12,000 per person per night. The fee usually covers a bunk bed or sleeping space, a meal (dinner and breakfast), and some basic amenities. Also, prices can vary depending on the hut station location and the level of service provided. The trail toward the summit can be challenging due to altitude and weather conditions. The terrain is steep and rocky with the scramble of volcanic rocks. Near the summit, the trail is exposed and can be very windy. On the way to the summit, climbers will pass on a small shrine, which is a significant site for climbers. Some stores sell souvenirs and snacks, which are also good places for rest areas while enjoying the view.
